This is the key error report. Not quite sure which child process is the problem. Hm, is nscd installed? Perhaps the problem is the call "/usr/sbin/nscd -i passwd" in /usr/lib/libpam-mklocaluser/pam-python.py? Try to comment it out and see if the situation improves.
