I agree with you about the utility of this module.
As nginx 1.1.0 is in unstable, I think it could be fixed in this.
I propose to add this module in all builds of nginx (full, extras and
light), as the cache proxy is one of the built-in functionality of
nginx.
I tried to add it to the package, and it seems to work.
I uploaded the source package, so maybe a maintainer could advise on
merging the modifications :
