At least one start or stop symlink need to remain for update-rc.d to not reinsert all symlinks on the next upload. For unlevels 0 and 6, both S* and K* are executed with 'stop' as the argument, so renaming is not going to work. The only solution I can think of would be to leave a start or stop symlink behind in one of the other runlevels.
