As the problem appeared after I upgraded several packages but not geeqie, it seems it is somehow related to these packages, but I do not know how. What I found is that geeqie works if it is run with user ID 0 (root), but does not work from any of regular user account. Even freshly created user account with no configuration files does not work, but root can run the program and the program recognizes pictures. Some sort of subsystem responsible for reading pictures or identifying pictures seems to require root access. It would be nice to know what file has to be changed via 'chmod' in order to solve this problem, but I do not know so far.
