As the problem appeared after I upgraded several packages but not geeqie, it 
seems it is somehow related to these packages, but I do not know how. What I 
found is that geeqie works if it is run with user ID 0 (root), but does not 
work from any of regular user account. Even freshly created user account with 
no configuration files does not work, but root can run the program and the 
program recognizes pictures. Some sort of subsystem responsible for reading 
pictures or identifying pictures seems to require root access. It would be 
nice to know what file has to be changed via 'chmod' in order to solve this 
problem, but I do not know so far.
