I tried it again today. Removed fglrx-driver and related packages. Booted fine untill I actually purged them, then everything went back to the garbage screen problem with the 3.0 kernel. Used 2.6.32-5 kernel to boot and blacklist radeon, and update initramfs.
After this 3.0 kernel is booting successfully again.
