normally i commit the changes first and then changelog as a separate step,
so that the changes can be cherry-picked/merged more cleanly between
branches. something like git-dch can be helpful for generating the
changelog semi-automatically, though the result sometimes needs a
little manual touch-up before committing.
i don't see the patches though, what branch did you put them in?
