I already worked on merging the code into the dpkg source and a month ago or so I were almost far enough, to send it for review by the dpkg maintainers, but then I lost time for it and the process has stalled a bit. I cannot say when I'll be able to finish that, but I'll try to spend some time on it again, soonish.
