The symptoms that you describe are similar to Launchpad #865470: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnucash/+bug/865470 Looks like this Ubuntu user solved the problem by cleaning up old libs which were hanging around in /usr/local/lib. It is probably worth checking your system just in case.
