Downloaded the source package (apt-get source) and built it (dpkg -us -uc -r) and installed it. Works. Reinstalled package from archive. It works now too (except for a minor bug in the file menu). Pulling in the build-depends upgraded some libraries: looks like one of the depends needs to require a more recent version.
