The Synaptics right button disabled is present almost every time I start
X.

One new datum: if I
  rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse

then on the controlling terminal (but not in /var/log/Xorg.log) I get
[typed by hand since copy-and-paste no longer possible]:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: read error No such device
(EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
(EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics
hardware
(EE) PreInit returned 11 for "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
---------------------------------------------------------------

Nevertheless, most of the touchpad functions (including scrolling
& tapping) continue to work after these messages.

Of course, similar messages occur in /var/log/Xorg.log.0...
