This is only the correct severity for a build failure when it happens on a
release architecture.  The latest freetype package has built successfully on
all release architectures, per <https://buildd.debian.org/freetype>.

Sorry, I prefer to use -Werror throughout.  I don't find the arguments for
not using it compelling.

I think you have a bug specific to the toolchain you're using on m68k.  From
what I can see, the code in question hasn't changed since the time gcc-4.4
was the default compiler on *all* architectures.
