Did you enable S/PDIF pass-through in PulseAudio? If so, does the problem
occur with non-pass-through audio tracks such as raw Wav or MP3?
Can you please copy the verbose VLC output (vlc -vv)?
If you get a flood of underflow warnings, you should probably try VLC
without line 346 in modules/audio_output/pulse.c:
