If I click on the timeline, project preview is shown as expected.

Hm tested with current sid/unstable, with it it works here..
I think the problem is related to Squeeze version of MLT.
The first start wizard reports MLT version as being to old for kdenlive.
The squeeze kdenlive sources are patched to make it build, lowering MLT
version dependency. It compiles, but some things don't work (what I
listed in the bug).
Changing MLT to debian-multimedia makes it appear OK in the wizard, and
it works, so that's my guess...
I do not realy think so. It may be because mlt from deb-multi has got
enabled more features, which were unsafe @ squeeze time (from their
license). The mlt from Squeeze is technical 0.5.8 (ok not 0.6.2 like
from deb-multi..), I just had to modify the build system, since it does
not know that it is the version it needs.
