Package: mozilla
Version: 2:1.7.8-1
Severity: wishlist

If you're an "ellie" (someone who doesn't like mice -- as opposed to a
"minnie", someone who does like mice), Mozilla is somewhat troublesome
to use. The keystrokes are not consistant, mostly because they change
depending on the current focus, a state not very obvious to the eye.

Just put your mouse away and try to use it with only the keyboard for a day.

Here are some examples:

Pressing an arrow key will sometimes scroll the message window and
sometimes the header summary. I know there is a little black border
that indicates which area is active, but it's not something you notice
when you're reading a message.

Pressing "m" will sometimes mark message read and sometimes unread.
It's a toggle, which is acceptable if only a single message is selected.
However, if I've selected multiple messages, the action depends on the
first message selected which is often scrolled off the window and not
visible.

The delete key does not work after I've hit "r", composed and sent a
message, and returned. I have to re-select the message.

I suggest a scheme like this:

- Arrow keys, pgup/pgdown, home/end, etc. _always_ operate on the
message area.

- Shift-<whatever> keys _always_ operate on the header summary area.

- Alt-<whatever> keys _always_ operate on the folder list area.

- There are no "toggle" keys. Unmodified keys do the action, shift-key
does the reverse or "super" version as applicable (i.e. reply-all
instead of reply).

These ideas are easily modified to fit within the structure of the
program and/or operating system. You could, for example, easily use
"ctrl" instead of "alt" or "shift" for a modifier; anything as long as
it's perfectly consistant.

With some changes like that, I think this program would be an
improvement for us keyboard loving people.

Thanks!

                                          Brian
