Hmmm... it looks like I may have spotted thesituation that leads to this problem. Using the Avahi discovery tool, I spotted an existing bonjour "node" being run by a colleague with kopete. When he turns it off, then it works again... so probably there's an incompatibility between empathy and kopete somewhere.
