According to my discussion with upstream the former versions were not
licensed under the GPL and it was just an editorial mistake to have the
GPL named there. It was never intended to be dual licensed.

So the only option is to completely remove the docs if the need arises.
Since the package is a GNU package the author is probably not under the
freedom to change the license as he wishes, the FSF holds the copyright.
