Hey, I've been trying to understand how this came to be but to no avail. I've even played with update-alternatives quite a lot trying to figure out what kind of context could have caused the alternative to end up dangling but nothing I did was able to reproduce such behavior.
I took a look at the involved packages maintainer scripts and they look correct to me. I'm inclined to think we were hit by this: http://bugs.debian.org/308838 There's also #311288. As the bug is already reported to dpkg and even duplicated there I believe the best course of action for us is to simply close these bugs, which I'll do if nobody's against.
