session.gc_maxlifetime = 3600 ; one hour
Then run the maxlifetime command again to check that it has picked up

My mistake, maxlifetime won't search conf.d/*, at least not according to
bug 452347. :(
You can still fix this by editing php.ini manually, although that does
mean changing a Debian-supplied configuration file.
