I do not see the behaviour you describe here using the same versions
and architecture.

Having it work for the one case but not for the other seems strange.
Could you make sure everyting is as it should be? (extrausers given
in the group line of /etc/nsswitch.conf, there is no group of that name
or gid in other sources (like /etc/group)), the group id is >= 500
....)

Do you have any idea what could be special in your setup?
