This message from Jon Dowland is the best one describing the problem: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=298982#70 Current kernels in Debian have some parts of OSS disabled, like: $ grep SEQUENCER_OSS /boot/config-* /boot/config-3.0.0-2-amd64:# CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS is not set /boot/config-3.1.0-1-amd64:# CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS is not set So the instructions from Jon ("* ensure that snd_seq_oss is loaded: this modules results in /dev/sequencer being created") are no longer possible with stock kernels. There are references in debian/changelog for linux that OSS has been disabled in 2009, however some OSS stuff still is enabled and compiled as module. There is no recent input to these bug reports (latest input messages are from 2007/2008), so maybe the problem went away for some reason (kernel fix, problematic hardware not popular), or since it was disabled in stock kernels it doesn't manifest except in very rare occasions.
