One need to know, that I tried to use the 486 variant (which is the
only option for non-PAE systems beyond squeeze).
You mean you're running the 486 kernel flavour? If so I'll try to
reproduce this once I have more than GPRS to download the kernel.

Yes, I'm running the 486 flavor. On non-PAE capable systems (like my early Pentium M or virtual box guest - because performance suffers in PAE mode) one is forced to use the 486 flavor beyond squeeze.

Before, I had the problem with cpu topology which was fixed by Ben Hutchings (see initial bug report). After fixing this, I'm running in the problem described in THIS bug report.
