You could try the 275.xx driver from squeeze-backports (if you need support for newer GPUs or kernels). Please run reportbug from the machine that has the problems (and after the problem has occurred) to collect useful information and logfiles. reportbug runs fine from the text console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) if X does not work.
