In French, we call a byte an "octet" (plural octets) and in short "o".

Also, wouldn't Mb, Gb and Tb need to be translated as well in this case?

Yes, it is why, in the subject I say "(byte,b)", I translate byte to octet and b to o --> Mo, Go, To.. :)
