i got also a problem with pidgin in wheezy.
I configured my Interface in /etc/network/interfaces and not in the panel app
in Gnome.
So i got X (cross) infront of the Network icon in the gnome panel (not managed)
Pidgin only works fine if i start it with -f option.
Maybe it would be nice if this worked with or without -f and with or without
the network manager in the panel.
So not big thing for me but when wheezy get stable it would be nice if it works
out of the box without any startup modifications.

If you disable n-m pidgin should work, IIRC.
