1. nothing in aptitude brought me to notice this and ask myself
whether I should do that, I had even not noticed that "gdm" had been
removed before you wrote this.

2. I have now started to look at gdm3, and it looks like it has at
least lost the --xnest feature, which is bad - this is a great
feature, and I'm not the only one to think this, see #601106.

I'd say that old gdm has been prematurely removed from Debian... but
this is another story. At least there will be people sticking to that
package for some time, even if it does not come back.

As for the -s flag, here is what gdm3 says:

$ gdmflexiserver -h
Usage:
gdmflexiserver [OPTION...] - New GDM login

Help Options:
  -h, --help Show help options

Application Options:
-c, --command=COMMAND Only the VERSION command is supported
-n, --xnest Ignored — retained for compatibility
  -l, --no-lock Ignored — retained for compatibility
  -d, --debug Debugging output
-a, --authenticate Ignored — retained for compatibility
-s, --startnew Ignored — retained for compatibility
  --monte-carlo-pi
  --version Version of this application

And I could verify that it indeed works fine with -s in my
xscreensaver config. That seems to settle the issue, could you please
reintroduce this flag in the next upload ?

TIA,
