Trimage is indeed a dangerous program. It modifies images in place immediately they are dropped onto the trimage window, optimising the images and at the same time losing file matadata.
It is a wrapper around other image utilities such as optipng, pngcrush and jpegoptim. These programs also modify the images in place by default. I suggest that this isn't a grave bug.
