It would be useful for debianutils to be marked "Multi-Arch: foreign",
to indicate that it can satisfy (presumably versioned) dependencies of
packages of other architectures. This would help supporting crossgrades
(say, from i386 to amd64); the latest mail¹ from the main dpkg developer
talks about this possibility.

There are currently 76 packages (with various essential ones upon them)
depending on debianutils in unstable, and while most of them depend on
very old debianutils versions and should just drop the dependency, at
least initscripts cannot do this.
