After discussion with the kernel maintainer in 2010 it seems it was the better way to only support the real kernel/initrd files in /boot/. With the (new) script /usr/sbin/liloconfig : 467 you see the search of /boot/vmlinuz* and further of /boot/initrd* If you still want to use the links in the root directory you can do it by hand.
