Neil, please take a look at http://bugs.debian.org/312744. I can
reproduce this issue, but I am unsure whether a fix exists. Sure
thing, mdadm could report a degraded array only if there is a faulty
component, but then it would have to be run for sure before the next
reboot. If I reboot a machine with a 3-piece RAID1 missing one
drive, the faulty/missing drive will simply not show up as failed
anymore.
