Dear Olaf,
down here in the Debian BTS we have a bugreport which turned out to be a
misconfiguration, or rather an incompatibility between the setting of
$HOME and kpathsea. The user had:

The result was that TEXMFHOME = /home/hrw//texmf with a double slash,
and kpathsea searched all subdirectories in home (Plus there was a
circular symlink, well. What you find on users' systems.).
Anyway, it might be an idea to remove any trailing slashes from
directory variables inherited from the environment, like HOME. It won't
hurt anywhere, and make it a bit more, well, "fool"proof.
What do you think?
