Alternately, while this may seem like crazy talk, SWIG could be fixed. I'll look into it over the next week and see if I can hammer it into shape a bit. Upstream's admission that SWIG's PHP generation is old, crusty, and unmaintained could also be an excuse to stop using SWIG to generate PHP bindings right now, but it's probably not THAT hard to just fix it to work properly. ...
