I have no time for testing either, but one thing that looks suspicious to me is that the expression is not quoted at all: - sed -i -e s/^$format[[:space:]].*/$modified_line/ $new_cfg + sed -i -e "s/^$format[[:space:]].*/$modified_line/" $new_cfg Second, a '/' in the comment part of $modified line will prematurely end the expression (that's probably not the problem here). Bernd, if you come to testing it on your system, editing /var/lib/dpkg/info/texlive-base-bin.postinst and adding a "set -x" line at the beginning (and maybe "set +x" after the case statement with the sed expression) might be helpful.
