The command I run is 'dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot' (the space in my
submission was a typo) and it fails in the way I described. Running
'dpkg-buildpackage -r fakeroot' is an immediate and rather obvious
failure, whereas my build actually successfully compiles the git
binaries and successfully runs the full git test suite.

It's just the perl stuff that's failing. Specifically, that I already
have git-core installed (and, therefore /usr/share/perl5/Git.pm) and,
I assume, the script that handles this class is not doing the right
thing in a fakeroot environment.

Please reopen this, it's a new problem. I have, as I said in my
original submission, successfully built previous version of git-core
from source using 'dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot'.
