This bug is not a release-critical bug.  As you have noted, there are
"workarounds" available, two of which are:

  - talk to mysql on 127.0.0.1
  - use mount --bind

These are, arguably, not workarounds at all, but simply required
configuration steps for the desired setup option.

Furthermore, this package is obviously usable if you're not running a
chrooted smtpd or if not using unix sockets to connect to mysql (because the
server is remote), so the package is not "unusable or mostly so."
