Package: grep
Version: 2.5.3~dfsg-4
Severity: serious

Hi,

In #414168, it was proposed to make '.' the default when rgrep or grep
-r is called without any file or dir name given in argument. The
proposer said:
> This change shouldn't reasonably break any existing scripts; if there
> are any scripts in the field calling rgrep (or even grep -r), I'd
> expect them to carefully specify a path to search.

Of course, there are many occurences of grep -r, for example in
debian/cdbs/1/rules/copyright-check.mk found in many packages (example:
wrr), that now FTBFS because of this change.

In general, I don't think it's a good idea to:
- have grep do magic, undocumented stuff (no, the manpage wasn't
  updated)
- diverge from upstream on such behaviour, without even proposing the
  behaviour upstream
- do those changes without testing for consequences

Please revert this change.
