Which libsdl1.2debian variant are you using? Are you possibly
using -oss? If so, could you please try it with -alsa or -all?

I strongly suspect the error inside the interaction with SDL's OSS interface.
I've never encountered that error and just replayed the first levels of Freedoom
and Doom I on two different systems and I cannot reproduce it.
