After attempting to upgrade sun-java5-jdk as well on the theory that
maybe it was some sort of conflict between old JDK and new fastjar, I
get this:
% update-alternatives --display jar.1.gz
update-alternatives: warning: alternative /usr/lib/jdk1.1/bin/jar.1.gz (part of
link group jar.1.gz) doesn't exist. Removing from list of alternatives.
jar.1.gz - manual mode
link currently absent
No versions available.
(The attempted JDK upgrade didn't help -- the JDK complained of the
very same thing, and the JRE (sun-java5-bin) appeared to have the same
issue with java.1.gz)

This seems to be due to an alternatives problem on the submitter's
machine, nothing to do with either jarwrapper or fastjar. Please reopen
if it can be reproduced elsewhere.
Thanks,
Matt
