I just gabve it a try on another laptop--also testing--and came to the same
result: it is not libgnomecanvas that breaks Evo for me. However, I got an
upgrade of bonobo and this seems to be the cause of the problem.

I can start Evo using

$ evolution -c contacts

but as soon as I try to switch to another component... BOOM.
