I can hardly fault you for your attitude. However there are known safe ways to test if the problem is fixed. Insert a CF card into your card reader while famd is running, do something with the CF card, and then unmount it from the Gnome desktop. Type "df" in the command line to see if the CF card has been unmounted (the correct behavior is that you should not see your CF card listed in the df output). Then, type # invoke-rc.d fam stop # umount /mnt/compactflash (replace with your CF card mount directory if it is still mounted) Verify with df that your CF card is indeed no longer mounted, and then you can remove the card with no danger whatsoever. If you are still unsure, you can remove the fam package, shutdown the computer, and then remove the CF card; this should be as safe as you can get. Of course, I would understand if you just do not wish to touch fam with a 10-foot pole for the rest of your life. But having confirmation from the original bug submitter is very important for our quality-assurance work, so I would really appreciate it if you could try this one.
