OK, the problem seems to be that it wants to scan the home directory
recursively, and thus does not really start in a sensible time. Running
freemat from an empty subdirectory works.

But this still does not help when running via the Applications menu, as
applications started there run from ~. It might make sense to start in
~/Documents/FreeMat instead of home, at least when started via
the .desktop file.
