Digging further, I see my patch is just a revert of

Robert, do you remember the history of that change? Because as far as
I understand the code, grub_raid_register() will just continue to
iterate if insert_array() returns an error. If it's just about
silencing the error because it is reported non-fatal: I think that's
wrong. If you've got array members with the same number, either there
is something going wrong in your system, and it's a good thing to
report that. Or you're messing around and you know what you are doing
and you know that you can ignore the error.
