This package entered testing and so now I hit the same problem too on
upgrade.

This symlink would explain the failed upgrade. It definitely shouldn't
be there. However, I see no evidence that the package created this
symlink in the past.
Did you create the symlink manually, perhaps following the "advice" from
<http://bugs.debian.org/634684#10>?
