Hi Simon,
Bernhard Link has been organizing a group of folks to take over
maintaining this package.
Also, I should mention it is not primarily a library -- the main use case
for singular is a command-line repl for doing mathematical calculations;
the library version is only used by the sagemath software (not currently
in Debian).
So I'd recommend against removing the package at this time.
