I should have been more explicit to begin with, sorry.  I just created a
symlink /usr/lib/libz.so -> /usr/lib/libz.so.1 and slapd started working
once again. ldd will *not* show slapd linked to libz.so but it is dlopen'ed
somewhere during the certificate verification process.  The symlink fixed
the problem for me so I did not bother any further.

If you're missing /usr/lib/libz.so, there is a good chance that this workaround
will fix the problem.
