When I attempt to boot 2.6.12 I get a kernel panic: /sbin/init: 432 cannot create /dev/null /sbin/init: 433 cannot open dev/console Kernel panic -- not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I get this problem with 2.6.12 when I attempt to boot with udev on and devfs off; and I can't boot under 2.6.14 at all. I thought the problem might be my DELAY=10 and/or BUSYBOX, but when I try a boot image with DELAY=0 I get the same problem. My /dev shows all the /dev/vc* files I would expect as well as all the /dev/tty* files I would expect. (The "local_rules" file below mounts a flash drive or an iRiver mp3 player when it's plugged into USB. It works without any problems.) I created a /dev/.static with console, null, and zero in it, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I expect that this is all a user error, but I haven't found any explicit migration information from devfs to udev. Am I supposed to rm /dev/*, for example? It's a bit of mystery, and of course if I rm /dev/* I'm not clear how I'd get it back if I have to go backwards to devfs. -- Package-specific info: -- /etc/udev/rules.d/: /etc/udev/rules.d/: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Nov 27 11:31 010_local_rules.rules -> ../ums.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Nov 27 08:02 020_permissions.rules -> ../permissions.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Oct 17 07:31 025_libgphoto2.rules -> ../libgphoto2.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Oct 31 09:23 025_libsane.rules -> ../libsane.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Nov 27 08:02 cd-aliases.rules -> ../cd-aliases.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Nov 27 08:02 compat-full.rules -> ../compat-full.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 Nov 27 08:02 devfs.rules -> ../devfs.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Nov 27 08:02 z20_persistent.rules -> ../persistent.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Nov 27 08:02 z50_run.rules -> ../run.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Nov 27 08:02 z55_hotplug.rules -> ../hotplug.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Aug 4 08:39 z60_alsa-utils.rules -> ../alsa-utils.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Sep 20 05:36 z60_hdparm.rules -> ../hdparm.rules lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Nov 27 08:02 z70_hotplugd.rules -> ../hotplugd.rules -- /sys/: /sys/block/hda/dev /sys/block/hda/hda1/dev /sys/block/hda/hda2/dev /sys/block/hda/hda3/dev /sys/block/hdc/dev /sys/block/hdd/dev /sys/block/md1/dev /sys/block/md2/dev /sys/block/md3/dev /sys/block/ram0/dev /sys/block/ram1/dev /sys/block/ram10/dev /sys/block/ram11/dev /sys/block/ram12/dev /sys/block/ram13/dev /sys/block/ram14/dev /sys/block/ram15/dev /sys/block/ram2/dev /sys/block/ram3/dev /sys/block/ram4/dev /sys/block/ram5/dev /sys/block/ram6/dev /sys/block/ram7/dev /sys/block/ram8/dev /sys/block/ram9/dev /sys/block/sda/dev /sys/block/sda/sda1/dev /sys/block/sda/sda2/dev /sys/block/sda/sda3/dev /sys/block/sda/sda4/dev /sys/class/drm/card0/dev /sys/class/input/event0/dev /sys/class/input/event1/dev /sys/class/input/event2/dev /sys/class/input/mice/dev /sys/class/input/mouse0/dev /sys/class/misc/agpgart/dev /sys/class/misc/device-mapper/dev /sys/class/misc/psaux/dev /sys/class/misc/rtc/dev /sys/class/printer/lp0/dev /sys/class/scsi_generic/sg0/dev /sys/class/sound/adsp/dev /sys/class/sound/audio/dev /sys/class/sound/controlC0/dev /sys/class/sound/dsp/dev /sys/class/sound/mixer/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D0c/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D0p/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D1c/dev /sys/class/sound/pcmC0D1p/dev /sys/class/sound/timer/dev /sys/class/usb/lp0/dev -- Kernel configuration: -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-k7 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages udev depends on: ii initscripts 2.86.ds1-6 Standard scripts needed for bootin ii libc6 2.3.5-8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libselinux1 1.26-1 SELinux shared libraries ii libsepol1 1.8-1 Security Enhanced Linux policy lib ii lsb-base 3.0-11 Linux Standard Base 3.0 init scrip ii makedev 2.3.1-79 creates device files in /dev ii sed 4.1.4-4 The GNU sed stream editor udev recommends no packages. -- no debconf information --------------------------------------- Received: (at 341038-done) by bugs.debian.org; 27 Nov 2005 22:37:13 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Nov 27 14:37:13 2005 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from attila.bofh.it ([213.92.8.2]) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 4.50) id 1EgV8z-0000zN-7X for [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Sun, 27 Nov 2005 14:37:13 -0800 Received: by attila.bofh.it (Postfix, from userid 10) id 1A4215F775; Sun, 27 Nov 2005 23:37:08 +0100 (CET) Received: by wonderland.linux.it (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 7F8A31C25B; Sun, 27 Nov 2005 23:36:55 +0100 (CET) Date: Sun, 27 Nov 2005 23:36:55 +0100 To: Moshe Yudkowsky <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#341038: udev will not boot: /dev/null not created, dev/console not found, kernel panic Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="fdj2RfSjLxBAspz7" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.11 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Marco d'Itri) X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 --fdj2RfSjLxBAspz7 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Nov 27, Moshe Yudkowsky <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I installed udev; I did *not* purge /etc/hotplug, as requested during ins= tall, because I noticed that udev actually uses information in /etc/hotplug. Not an udev bug, this is some initrd/initramfs/whatever issue. I suggest a google search before filing other bugs. > I expect that this is all a user error, but I haven't found any explicit = migration information from devfs to udev. It's supposed to just work, and usually it does.
