Upgrading from 2.9.0-7 to 2.10 or 2.11 doesn't prompts to change
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf and doesn't point to possible problem with keeping old
fonts.conf version, although comment in the file says "IT WILL BE REPLACED WHEN
FONTCONFIG IS UPDATED".
Not updating fonts.conf leads to the following: "sans", "serif", "monospace"
and possibly other match queries to fontconfig return unpredictable font faces,
which can be even serif face for "sans" query etc. They are unpredictable but
the same for every query, so no "font-blinking" effect, just ugly,
inappropriate faces everywhere (in Mate DE in my case). Some of them is taken
from my ~/.fonts directory, although there are only "art" faces there, and they
aren't included in any fontconfig config file by me.
I've got this bug twice on two different Debian installations: at home and at
the office, and both times i spent almost full-day to find a way to fix it.
Interestingly, downgrading to previously installed fontconfig version didn't
fix the bug both times.
Finnaly, I found a way to fix the problem, just needed to remove the following
sections from /etc/fonts/fonts.conf :
