Could you also please try other desktop environments? GNOME would be the most interesting, followed by any other. Also, since it seems to be related to afs, could explain your afs setup so that we can try to reproduce? Please try to keep it as simple as possible while it still would reproduce the problem. It *might* be interesting to strace the program tha causes the freeze (e.g. gedit opening the textfile), although it's possible that this would lead nowhere.
