Well, and after all that the package still fails to build at the end, at least on Ubuntu, because of an incompatibilty between the paths metview is expecting for hdf5 and those actually shipped in the package. make[3]: *** No rule to make target '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/hdf5/serial/lib/libhdf5.so', needed by 'bin/GeoTool'. Stop.
