Package: alienblaster-data
Severity: serious

Hello.

alienblaster content (not code) is used "Red Cross flag".
This is "Health item" image. (Restore Player's Health)

"Red Cross flag" is non-free, because this image is not freely use. (Violate
DFSG)
I think that this is misuse, It is violate of law.

Since you have not specified the image in question, I will assume that
you are referring to

https://sources.debian.net/data/main/a/alienblaster/1.1.0-9/images/itemHealth.bmp

I don't think this image violates the Geneva Conventions or related law
because the shape of the red cross is very different and it does not
resemble the flag of the ICRC.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_ICRC.svg

There is also a huge difference between misusing the red cross in real
life, which is indeed a protective sign and misuse is punishable by law,
and the use in fantasy games like Alienblaster.

I have found three interesting articles [1] [2] [3] and I can see why
you think this might be an issue for Debian. But if you carefully read
[2], then you will find the following paragraph:

"Does this also apply to more fantasy oriented war games?

No, the ICRC is talking about video games that simulate real-war
situations. It is not suggesting that this apply to games that portray
more fictional scenarios such as medieval fantasy or futuristic wars in
outer space.

A few media reported that certain virtual acts performed by characters
in video games could amount to serious violations of the law of armed
conflict. Is this correct?

No. Serious violations of the laws of war can only be committed in
real-life. A person cannot commit a war crime simply by playing a video
game."

Alienblaster does not simulate real war combat. It is a fantasy sci-fi
shooter game and completely unrealistic.

Since there are no trademark or copyright violations and no misuse of
the original red cross symbol, I am going to close this bug report now.

Regards,

Markus
