Okay, I'm a bit confused how both events could relate, the only thing that I can think of is that artsd would open your alsa device, and hence prevent GStreamer from opening it. Perhaps Rhythmbox or GStreamer crashes in this case, but if you fail to reproduce, it's not easy to diagnose (I can't start artsd neither). I propose we keep the bug open for a couple of weeks, and if you find a way to reproduce the bug, please attach a backtrace of the crash with debugging symbols (<http://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace>). Make sure to run rhythmbox with --g-fatal-warnings though, as the errors your reported initially are likely to cause uninteresting consequences.
